Call for Submissions – Get Your Voice Heard!

Since our switch to an electronic newsletter, our cover articles have become the main focus of each issue. We’ve covered topics such as awards, theatre facts, welcomes from our president, and more. As a board of representatives, it’s been loudspeaker for us to inform you on the latest news within the guild.

But you have a voice, too.

We’re putting out a call to all of you, our Theatre Arts Guild members, to get your voice heard. Have an opinion about our theatre community that can generate a healthy discussion? Write about it. Have a funny anecdote that happened during the run of a show? Write about it. We value your thoughts as a member and want to extend this opportunity to you.

There are a few general guidelines that must be met. A good cover article is a one that is unoffensive, doesn’t scrutinize any single group or person, and is appropriate for all ages. It should also be kept around the range of 200 to 300 words (this article, for example, is exactly 232 words).

Cover article submissions should be sent to Newsletter Chairperson, Steve Hartman atstevenzhartman@gmail.com. Articles desired to be featured in the most immediate newsletter should be sent by the noted deadline under the sub-articleTAGLines Details (see below).

We’re very excited to offer this opportunity and we look forward to reviewing your submissions! Now get writing!

An Organization of Support – A Welcome from your TAG President

A new theatre season has begun and, along with it, my term as TAG board president.  I’m looking forward to a fantastic year for Omaha theatre and for TAG.  Many thanks to our immediate past-president, Deborah Krambeck:  she is a tough act to follow, but thankfully, she hasn’t gone too far away, and I am already grateful for her ongoing support and guidance.  Thanks also to our board members whose terms have ended:  Jim Herron, Cathy Hirsch, Connie Jo Podendorf, and Pat Thomas.  Thank you for your hard work and commitment to Omaha theatre!  We’ll miss you—and you’re still in my Rolodex, so you won’t get too far away.  Also, thank-you to our dedicated webmaster, Thomas Bertino, who is (semi) retiring after many years of service.

Welcome to our new board members:  Katie Cameron, Echelle Childers, Sharon Diaz, and Matthew Pyle, along with returning member Jennifer Gilg.  They are already hard at work.

Being president is a little—okay, a LOT—scary.  But I am also excited about it.  I’ve been a TAG member for 15 years.  I had worked in theatre before moving to Omaha in 1990, but for the first six years I lived here, I was scared to get involved.  I thought everyone knew everyone, and I would be the outsider, and “they” wouldn’t let me in.  I attended theatre productions, but I did not work on any.  In 1996, at the urging of a friend, I auditioned for ADAM AND THE EXPERTS at the Blue Barn, and I was cast.  Working in that supportive environment with Darin Templeton, Martin Magnuson, Jim Hoggatt, Lissa Hall, and others, built my confidence, and additional opportunities arose.

At that time I hadn’t heard of TAG, but I soon had a chance to work backstage on WHOOP-DEE-DOO! For SNAP! with past Backstage Award winner Andy Hulett, and co-director Roxanne Wach, who just happened to be the TAG president at that time.  They told me about TAG and the benefits that came with membership:  the newsletter, the TAG roster, the TAG ticket discount.  Though I appreciate all of those things, looking back, I don’t think I joined for anything tangible.  I joined in order to be a part of a community, the Omaha theatre community.  TAG is the people who create and who support theatre in Omaha, and I wanted to create and support it too.

And my fear that I would be an outsider?  I couldn’t have been more wrong.  I was welcomed by everyone, and, to this day, I love seeing how our theatres and theatre artists welcome new people and help one another.  I have watched, for example, the network of Property Masters and designers in town help each other find and/or build whatever unusual prop need that comes up.  I have watched us rally to find an actor on short notice when someone falls ill or has an emergency.  We support our own.  My wish for this year is that you feel supported by the Omaha theatre community.  My hope is that TAG is a part of that support system.  And if you have friends who are not TAG members, let them know we still have all of our tangible benefits of membership, but it’s the intangibles that make membership sublime.

Thomas Lowe,
President

Play Synopsis

Titus Andronicus begins with the triumphant return of Titus and his sons from war with the Goths. He has in tow, prisoners of the vanquished Goths: Queen Tamora and her three sons. At Titus’ request, Tamora’s son is executed to satiate the spirits of his slain sons. Marcus Andronicus, Titus’ brother, declares that Titus should be crowned Emperor, he refuses and defers to the next in line, Saturninus, the son of the late emperor. Titus’ problems grow from that moment on, as Tamora, her sons, and Aaron plot revenge upon Titus and his family. Titus fights back til nearly all members of both families are decimated. A tale of power of revenge and the madness that results; which to this day still rings true.

THE BLUEBARN THEATRE ANNOUNCES SEASON TWENTY-FOUR

RED
by John Logan
(September 27 – October 20, 2012)
2010 TONY® Award winner for Best Play

Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. Raw and provocative, Red is a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraodinary setting.

WHO KILLED SANTA?
by Neil Haven
(November 23 – December 15, 2012)
Sponsored by Omaha Steaks

Santa is hosting his annual holiday party attended by the usual holiday favorites: Frosty, Tiny Tim, The Little Drummer Boy, and Rudolph, who all have a bone to pick with Santa. After tempers flare, Santa ends up with a candy cane through the heart! No one will confess, no one can leave, and Christmas is in jeopardy. As the tension builds, a couple of incompetent detectives enter the scene, and all the dirty secrets of these iconic holiday characters are revealed. With the help of the audience, the murderer is convicted and sentenced in this choose-your-own-ending musical murder mystery holiday whodunit!

A BEHANDING IN SPOKANE
by Martin McDonagh
(February 21 – March 16, 2013)

In this darkly comical new work from the acclaimed playwright Martin McDonagh, the mysterious gun-toting Carmichael has been searching for his missing left hand for decades. Enter two bickering lovebirds with a hand to sell, and a hotel clerk with an aversion to gunfire, and soon life and death are up for grabs. A Behanding in Spokane turns over American daily existence, exposing the obsessions, prejudices, madness, horrors, and above all, the absurdities that crawl beneath it.

THE 39 STEPS
Adapted by Patrick Barlow From the novel by John Buchan
(May 9 – June 15, 2013)

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced mystery for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! This 2-time TONY® and Drama Desk Award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, over 150 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of 4), an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers and some good old-fashioned romance! UNO Theatre Announces 2012-2013 Season

OMAHA— The University of Nebraska at Omaha Department of Theatre announces the 2012-2013 Season.

The first of four Mainstage productions that UNO Theatre will stage for the 2012-2013 season is William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, directed by D. Scott Glasser. It runs from September 26-29, and October 3-6.

War, honor, family, revenge. These central Shakespearean themes get their first bracing examination in the Bard’s early tragedy, Titus Andronicus. Titus is Rome’s greatest general and the head of a noble Roman family. When his armies vanquish the Goths, their defeated queen unleashes a fury that rocks Titus’s city, devastates his children, and shatters his sense of self. The cycle of revenge is shocking, bloody, and all-encompassing, but expressed through poetry and theatricality as vivid, energized, and thrilling as anything in Shakespeare’s later works. It is undeniably a play for our time: a sophisticated blend of heart-stopping drama and pitch black humor.

Mary Zimmerman’s Mirror of the Invisible World, directed by Dr. Cindy Melby Phaneuf, will be UNO Theatre’s second Mainstage production. Mirror of the Invisible World will run November 14-17 and November 28-December 1.

Adapted from a great 12th century Persian epic, Mirror of the Invisible World, tells the story of a young King, who, after falling in love with seven princesses—each from a different land—builds seven pavilions to house his beautiful brides. Each night, a different princess weaves for him another wondrous tale of love, loss and adventure.

UNO will continue its 2012-2013 Mainstage season with two productions running in repertory: Liz Duffy Adams’ Or, directed by graduate student Sarah Fogarty, and Caridad Svich’s The Archaeology of Dreams directed by graduate student Thais Flaitt Giannoccaro. The two productions will run from February 20-23 and February 27-March 3. The repertory schedule will be released soon.

Or, centers on Aphra Behn who is getting out of the spy trade and into show biz, if she can only write her play without interruptions from her love life—celebrity Nell Gwynne, King Charles II, and double-agent William Scott, among others. While war rages and Aphra and her friends celebrate free love, cross-dressing and pastoral lyricism, the 1660s start to look a lot like the 1960s. Verse or prose, now or then, love or death…and a lot of kissing.

The Archeology of Dreams is a seriocomic, kaleidoscopic exploration of the intersection between origin, history, and memory as a child is born in the U.S. in the year 1963. A President is about to be assassinated, a country singer dies, a senator falls from grace, and two surfers look for bliss in the imagined Scottish skies.

The final Mainstage Production will be Steven Gooch’s Female Transport. It will run from April 10-13 and April 17-20.

Between 1787 and 1868, the British Crown shipped men, women, and children in bondage to the British penal colony of Australia. In Female Transport, a riotous group of disparate cellmates transforms during the six-month sea journey to a tough, unified matriarchal society—ready to change the wild land they are about to inhabit into a more just place than the England they left behind. As songs of the period punctuate and underscore the action, these women strive to prove themselves more civilized below deck than their male captors above.

A hilarious show full of heart and hummable tunes, AVENUE Q is about trying to make it in NYC with big dreams and a tiny bank account. Ballots are on the way!

The 2011 – 2012 theatre season is nearing its final curtain. Over 100 plays ran for at least 3 weekends; more than 50 special events were staged. How many of these productions have you attended? Which ones come to mind most quickly? Are you ready to nominate your favorites for TAG Awards?

Nominations ballots will be mailed on June 4thto each person whose membership was in effect on May 30th. These ballots do take some time and effort to prepare, but not nearly as much time and effort as the people onstage and backstage put into the shows you enjoyed. Please plan to participate in the TAG Awards Nomination process by following these 3 simple directions:
July 9that P. S. Collective

      • Check off the productions you’ve attended on the list at the front of the ballot. Neglecting to do this will prevent your votes from being tabulated.
      • Write in the names of people/productions you believe deserve recognition on the lines in the appropriate categories. You may make as many as 5 nominations in each category; there is no minimum number of nominations necessary.
      • Mail your completed ballot – including the list of shows you saw – to Debbie Krambeck at the address listed so that it is received by Monday, June 25, 2012.

So, get your ballot and a pen. Go through your programs or check the information available on the TAG website. Take advantage of this TAG membership benefit and nominate the people and productions that made a special impression on you this theatre season.

See you Monday, for the announcement of the 2011-2012 TAG Award Nominees! Doors open at 5:30pm so you can enjoy drinks/dinner before the program begins at 7pm.

SNAP!fest 2012 – MilkMilkLemonade and Band Fags!

Date
31 May 2012 until 24 Jun 2012

Location
SNAP! Productions
3225 California Street
Omaha, NE 68132

After more than eight years, SNAP! Productions is bringing back its New Works Festival. This June, SNAP! fest 2012 will host the Premieres of two great shows. Making its Omaha Premiere at SNAP! fest 2012, is Joshua Conkel’s comedy MilkMilkLemonade which is an unusual telling of childhood growing pains. Making its World Premiere at the Festival is Frank Anthony Polito’s comedy Band Fags! which is based on his award winning novel that was banned on Facebook. MilkMilkLemonade is the story of 11-year old Emory, who dreams of being a singer and a dancer. His plans to ribbon dance his way to television’s Reach For The Stars are thwarted by his Nanna, who is determined to mold Emory into a normal American boy, and erase his days of jazz hands and Nina Simone covers. A children’s play definitely not for children, MilkMilkLemonade is a queer pondering of gender, identity, and the need to dream up a world where you can be who you are.

Band Fags! tells the story of best friends since seventh grade, Jack and Brad, as they come of age in suburban Detroit during the mid-1980s. As Jack and Brad make their way through junior high and high school, their friendship grows deeper and more complicated. From stealing furtive glances at Playgirl to discussing which celebrities might be “like that,” from navigating school cliques to dealing with crushes on girls and guys alike, Jack is trying to figure out who and what he is. Alas, life is not a John Hughes movie. And sooner or later, Jack must choose which path to follow. But will his decision come at the expense of his friendship with Brad?

MilkMilkLemonade is being directed by Robert Williams and has a five person cast. The cast includes Michael Martinez, Matt Uehling, Dani Cleveland, Kathleen Lomax and Sarah Liken. Band Fags! is being directed by SNAP! board member, Thomas Lowe, and has a cast that includes Joey Galda and Predrag PJ Sudar. Producing the festival this year are Echelle Childers and Michal Simpson.

Buy your tickets now for SNAP! fest 2012. MilkMilkLemonade will run May 31-June 3 and June 9-10, 14-15. Band Fags! will run June 7-8 and June 16-17, 21-24. SNAP! Productions is located at 3225 California Street. Curtain times are 8:00 pm, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 6:00 pm on Sundays. The Sunday, June 24th show will start at 2:00 pm.  Horton and Friends Save the Day in Seussical: The Musical,June 1-17 at The Rose Theater

What do you get when you combine The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, and Horton the elephant? It’s an evening with one of the greatest children’s storytellers of all time in Seussical: The Musical, June 1-17 at The Rose Theater. Join Horton the elephant in his attempt to save JoJo and the Whos and protect Mayzie La Bird’s egg, in the Broadway show that has charmed audiences across the globe.

The Cat in the Hat narrates the story, which begins with Horton’s discovery of a speck of dust containing tiny Who people, including JoJo, a Who child sent off to Butter Battling Military School for thinking too many “thinks.” Children ages four and up will recognize many of their favorite Dr. Seuss stories mixed into the funny, original script, with toe-tapping songs by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Aherns.

The Rose actors give Dr. Seuss’s lovable characters some of the funniest and most energetic performances of the year, with Kevin Ehrhart as The Cat in the Hat almost stealing the show. The Mayor of Whoville, Sour Kangaroo and General Genghis Khan Schmitz all take the stage to prove the forces of friendship, family, and community triumph over all adversity.

Seussical: The Musical will be presented June 1 through 17 with shows on Thursdays at 7 pm, Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 2 pm and Sundays at 2 pm. The show is recommended ages four to adult.

21 & Over: Passion Play by Sarah Ruhl

June 18, 2012

From the author of last season’s hit The Vibrator Play comes this provocative epic masterpiece of the intersection of belief and the make-believe. A poetic and quirky triptych, Passion Play follows three sets of amateur performers in three different eras as they grapple with the unsettling ways in which the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection becomes a living presence in their own lives. With a dynamic storyline that leaps through time to portray characters like Queen Elizabeth, Hitler and Ronald Reagan, Passion Play is filled with playful and profound moments that will challenge your ideas about religion, politics and the inherent conflicts of human nature.

Teens ‘N’ Theater Debuts Original Stories
with Young Playwrights Festival,
May 5-6 at The Rose Theater

Building tension, revealing character, dramatic confrontation and release: the techniques of the playwright’s trade help bring the stories of five young Omaha writers to stage in Teens ‘N’ Theater’s Young Playwrights Festival May 5-6 at the Rose’s Hitchcock Theatre.  Each piece captures the writer’s unique style of storytelling and features teenage characters experiencing the challenges of coming of age in Omaha.

“Being in Young Playwrights is a unique opportunity,” said Megan McCracken, a young playwright and junior at Papillion LaVista South. “It means you get to work with a professional director and really see the words you have written come to life through a director and actors.” McCracken’s play Chef’s Tales, which follows a young chef trying to open up her own café in a struggling community, will be performed as a script-in-hand reading.

With a variety of other issues and points of view represented, audience members are sure to hear some fresh voices.

Sarah Sindelar, a junior at Bellevue East, wrote a piece called Tonight is for You, a romantic piece that shows the effect of the declining economy on teens today. Maggie Fey, a junior at Central, wrote Bloom, a monologue-driven piece that examines jealousy and self-doubt in high school girls. Luc Murphree, a senior at Westside, wrote Finding Nemoczeck, an absurdist play about teen interaction and the search for something more.

For the students, the program has been a chance to rewrite their work, see through the eyes of actors, and fine tune some of their most ambitious projects.  “I originally thought of Finding Nemoczeck as a movie, but I could never fully form that thought,” Murphree said. “So instead I got the idea of a modernized Waiting for Godot  for the stage.”

Before beginning writing their plays, the young playwrights discussed aspects of the craft such as writing monologues, objectives and tactics, conflict, inner voices of characters, plot and scene structures, proper format, and that mysterious place where story ideas come from.

Annah Shipman, a junior at Omaha Central, said the Teens ‘N’ Theater program gives her the satisfaction of developing her work, And Then They Got Cake-a play about a five-year-old who gives her teenage siblings some much needed perspective. “The best thing about Young Playwrights is the opportunity it gives you,” said Shipman.  “You can write, get feedback, and then see your play performed. It’s incredibly rewarding.”

Young Playwrights Festival will be performed Saturday, May 5 at 4:30 pm and Sunday, May 6 at 4:30 pm.  Tickets are $6 at the door or in advance by calling The Rose Box Office at (402) 345-4849. Teens ‘N’ Theater tickets are not available online.

Staged reading of Boy Gets Girl by Rebecca Gilman for the GPTC

Date
14 May 2012

Location
Omaha Commmunity Playhouse
6915 Cass Street
Omaha, NE 68132

A staged reading of Boy Gets Girl, a play written by Pulitzer prize-nominated playwright Rebecca Gilman, will be presented by Metropolitan Community College’s Great Plains Theatre Conference StageWrite Initiative. The reading, directed by Lara Marsh, will be on Monday, May 14, 7:30 p.m. at the Omaha Community Playhouse, 6915 Cass St. The reading will be followed by a moderated panel discussion between the audience, cast members and two guest panelists from the Omaha Police Department: Sgt. Kim Retzlaff, Domestic Violence Unit and Bridget Fitzpatrick, crime prevention specialist. The reading is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted.

With this reading, the GPTC will introduce the community to one of Gilman’s remarkable plays and provide a glimpse of the breadth of work to be presented at the upcoming GPTC. This event is part of the GPTC StageWrite Women’s Initiative, created to bring awareness to women in theatre and raise funds to celebrate the goals and achievements of women playwrights. The StageWrite Women’s Initiative is a year-round project bringing together women playwrights and their supporters both locally and nationally to recognize and impact the imbalance between male and female playwrights who are being produced in the United States.

Boy Gets Girl uses the story of what happens when a blind date turns into a living nightmare to examine stalking, sexism and the nature of the idea of romantic pursuit. The main character, Theresa Bedell, is a smart, successful woman in her 30s who writes for an upscale literary magazine. She is utterly devoted to her work and struggles with relationships. When Theresa goes on an awkward blind date with a friend of a friend, she sees no reason to continue the relationship—but the man thinks otherwise. While Theresa is at first annoyed yet flattered by his continuing attention, her attitude gradually changes to one of fear and fury when he starts to menace her and those around her.

In brilliantly delineating the kind of terror a woman in full control of her life feels when everything around her suddenly seems to be a threat, Gilman probes the dark side of relationships with the rich insight and compelling characterizations that have distinguished her earlier plays and made her one of the most exciting playwrights working today.

Gilman is the honored playwright for the 2012 Great Plains Theatre Conference. The 7th annual GPTC is scheduled for May 26–June 2 at MCC’s Fort Omaha Campus. More information is available at www.mccneb.edu/gptc, www.Facebook.com/GreatPlainsTheatreConference and www.Twitter.com/GreatPlainsTC.The Conference is supported by the Nebraska Arts Council, Nebraska Cultural Endowment and the Nebraska Humanities Council.

Gilman is an associate artist at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago and teaches in the Master of Fine Arts program at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

SUPPORT STAGE ONE TO RESTORE 1920s VAUDEVILLE THEATER IN BENSON NEBRASKA

Sunday, April 29, 2012 will mark the fourth of six Sunday brunches at the Pizza Shoppe, 6056 Maple Street, which includes a full breakfast buffet and a guided tour for a behind the scenes look at what will once again become Benson’s community theatre. Mother’s Day, May 13, 2012 will be the final fundraiser that is set to raise a total amount of $50,000.

The Benson Theatre project is being promoted by a group of Omaha entrepreneurs who will launch the restoration project for Benson’s 1920s Vaudeville Theatre located at 6054 Maple Street.

All fundraising proceeds from the brunches will go toward securing the physical space for 12 months. In late May, stage two will continue the fundraising effort with all proceeds going toward the full restoration of the building as close as possible to its original state. Stage three will open the space to the public as a community Theatre, estimated for the Fall of 2013.

Amy Ryan, Owner and Operator of the Pizza Shoppe and PS Collective, is leading the restoration project with a diverse group of community representatives that includes the theater, film, music, and non-profit sector.

When the Benson Theatre was originally built in 1929, it hosted numerous groups of touring vaudeville theater acts in an effort entertain the working middle class of the post-Civil War Midwest. After the space was used for retail business for the past 50 years, the building was procured by Lund Ross Constructors (LRC) in 2010.

LRC has national accolades for the historic renovations of the Hughes-Irons Building, The Brandeis, and The Omaha Building. They will be working with Alley-Poyner Macchietto Architecture (APMA), who are also experienced in working with historic buildings. Images of the proposed layout and architectural design will be on display during the Theatre tour

Brigit Saint Brigit’s New Location throughout The Rest of The Season

Brigit Saint Brigit is pleased to announce that the location for the rest of the Theatre’s productions this season will be at 1002 Dodge, in the ground floor corner space of the Capitol District’s 1000 Dodge Condominium Building.

Situated on the northwest corner of Dodge and 10th Street (facing Dodge and across the street from the Hilton), this elegant space is both lovely and centrally-located.  At the heart of the Capitol District, it offers a variety of options close by for sandwich suppers or full-course dinners.  Just next door is the Nosh Wine Lounge, an intimate and relaxing bistro, offering before-show or after-show wine and cocktails, and a casual bite or more substantial fare.

We are creating a 70-seat theatre, with a spacious lobby that we think you will find comfortable and friendly.

The rest of the season includes the works of three Irish authors and Geoffrey Chaucer—Conor McPherson’s The Seafarer (opening on February 17th), Samuel Beckett’s one-act Krapp’s Last Tape played on the same bill with J. M. Synge’s one-act The Tinker’s Wedding (April)—and Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales (May).

A TAG Night Out will be held on April 12th at 7:30 benefitting the TAG Scholarship fund.

“When Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible was first staged in 1953, it was widely praised as a symbolic representation of the recklessness of the McCarthy –era and the country’s crusade against communism. After a group of young women is accused of witchcraft in the Puritan community of Salem, Mass. in 1692, Abigail Williams is held for suspicion of practicing magic. Abigail in turn levels charges against John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth. Abigail has a private grudge against the Proctors; while working as their servant, she had an affair with John, and when John ended the relationship and returned to his wife, Abigail was fired. Now the Reverend Parris is hearing accusations and counter-accusations of misdeeds from all sides of the community in the wake of Abigail’s charges, so he brings in Judge Danforth to determine who is guilty or innocent. However, given the moral climate of the time, it seems someone has to be found guilty of witchcraft, even though firm evidence of wrongdoing is becoming hard to come by.”

The Crucible will be presented in the Black Box theatre of the Arts Center on the campus of Iowa Western Community College. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors, students, and TAG members.  Iowa Western students and faculty and staff are free with a valid ID. But they have had troubles disciplining young Mary Tilford. Mary, angry at the way she has been treated, tells her influential grandmother a secret. Amelia Tilford then spreads the rumor to the other parents at the school, who then remove their children from the school.  Karen, Karen’s fiancé Joe, and Martha, unaware of why their pupils are leaving, finally approach Mrs. Tilford. She reveals that Mary spied on her teachers and found them “together”. This leads Karen and Martha to sue Mrs. Tilford, but they lose the case due to lack of evidence, specifically the testimony of Martha’s aunt, Lily Mortar. After they close the school Karen and Martha try to regain a normal life, but it is impossible. While sitting around and chatting, Martha reveals her secret: although she never acted on her feelings, she has always been attracted to Karen, beyond friendship. This is too much for Martha. She goes to her room and then commits suicide by gunshot.

March 2012 TAGLines – printer-friendly version

TAG Night Out (TNO)

We’d like to give a big THANK YOU to all the theatres offering TNOs to their productions.  As we have more and more of these events being offered, here’s a reminder of what a TNO entails and how it benefits both individual TAG members and TAG member organizations.

Typically, theatres will offer a TAG Night Out for their preview or final dress performance. TAG members are allowed to come see the production and in lieu of paying for a ticket, a suggested donation to the TAG scholarship fund is made.  A TAG board member will be at all TNOs to collect money and answer any questions people may have.

TNOs provide:

  • the theatre with an enthusiastic audience for its production prior to the opening, and often on the night the production is being reviewed,
  • our membership with an opportunity to see more theatre productions at a reduced (donate what you can afford) price,
  • TAG with a vehicle to help fund our annual scholarships.

To schedule a TAG Night Out, please contact taglines@theatreartsguild.com AND the current TNO Chair, Noah Diaz (noah.a.diaz@gmail.com).  Please be sure to notify us early enough to allow sufficient time for us to advertise the TNO and to find a board member to cover the event.

Debbie Krambeck
President

In the twilight of the Victorian age, a gentleman doctor has innocently invented a most extraordinary and mysterious device for treating “hysteria.” When his increasingly despondent wife overhears strange sounds emanating from the operating theatre and sees patients leaving in the pink of health, she is compelled to investigate – even if it means throwing over domesticity for desire.  Ranging from the tender to the farcical, Ruhl’s stylish comedy pulses and hums along as it dispels old-fashioned notions of female sexuality, intimacy and marriage at the dawn of the age of electricity.

East Texas Hot Links at the John Beasley Theatre

Location

John Beasley Theater

3010 R Street

Omaha, Nebraska 68107

‘EAST TEXAS HOT LINKS’ OPENS AT THE JBT, FEB. 17

Although the setting may be East Texas in 1955, the message of “East Texas Hot Links” transcends a specific time and place, as applicable today as in the mid 20th century. Written by Eugene Lee, the play’s title is derived from the reflection of Adolph, a blind laborer who regularly delivers jugs of corn liquor to the cafe. “Everything needs something to die so it can keep on livin’,” he points out. “We all a part of it. Links . . . in the food chain.”

Playwright Eugene Lee also directs the John Beasley Theater’s production, set to run February 17 through March 11. The 90-minute one act play is set in the pre-integration South, where eight poor, black rural Texans visit a favorite haunt, a dusty backwoods bar called Top o’ the Hill Café, a café specifically denoted “For Coloreds Only.” In the course of the play, a combustible situation simmers to its inevitable explosion.

“East Texas Hot Links” is a kinetic, ruthless portrayal of self-interest and betrayal. Lee sees the lessons closer to home. “It parallels what’s going on in the black community with gangs,” he said. “It’s very destructive. It kills itself, kills its culture, kills its family. It’s self-inflicted genocide.” Yet he shies away from indicting his characters. “They’ve found a means to be nourished, and often that nourishment is themselves. They’re eagles who’ve learned to soar in their cages–with dignity and pride.”

The JBT production features a cast of returning actors and new faces. Audiences will be delighted to see Tyrone Beasley, Carl Brooks and TammyRa’ back on the stage. The show is produced by Mark O’Leary, set design by Wes Clowers. As playwright and director, Lee guides each actor to become the character he intends to portray.

The artist-in-residence at Texas State University, Lee runs the Zach Scott Theater for the Performing Arts in Austin, Tex. His list of credits as an actor include television shows, movies and theater productions. Lee spent three years with New York’s Negro Ensemble Company and was in the original cast of the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama “A Soldier’s Play.” (See full bio below; photo available on request. Call 402-598-7600 to arrange interviews.)

Ticket prices for “East Texas Hot Links” are $27 adults; $22 seniors, students and TAG members; $16 all seats on Thursdays. Group tickets prices available by calling 402-502-5767.

BLUE BARN’S WITCHING HOUR PRESENTS

GUMBALL MACHINE

WITH THIS CURIOUS NEW SCRIPT, ACTORS LEARN ALL ROLES AND AUDIENCE CHOOSES THEIR CAST

OMAHA, NE – Omaha’s original late-night theatre company will open their new show Gumball Machine on February 22nd at the Blue Barn Theatre.  Playwrights Andrew Yolland and Sarah Carlson-Brown originally created this beautiful and strange script several years ago for Instant Theatre at the Shelterbelt, now it has been re-imagined for the late night stage.  Witching Hour ensemble members Shannon Jaxies, Jenny Pool, and playwright Yolland have learned the entirety of the text, and welcome the audience to assign them their characters only fifteen minutes before the start of the show.  Aided by the incredible costuming skills of Sarah Lorsung Tvrdik (style columnist for The Reader and blogger for fashflood.com) and a set made entirely of mismatched chairs, Gumball Machine is a story about desperation and joy, leaving the audience pleasantly disturbed and delightfully puzzled. But before you try to figure out the secrets of Gumball Machine, know this: They’re not dead. They’re not anything. They’re just words.

SNAP! Productions to mount Omaha Premiere of The Paris Letter

In light of recent financial melt-downs and scandals, The Paris Letter is a propitious cautionary tale about a time-honored axiom–importance of being true to oneself. The play deals with Sandy Sonnenberg, a successful scion of Wall Street who has achieved great success in his family’s New York City investment firm. Happily married to Katie and a doting step-father to her son Sam, Sandy is looking forward to retirement and the prospect of beginning his “third act.” Through his close friend Anton Kilgallen, he is introduced to ambitious young financier Burt Sallis, a person he sees as his potential business successor. But it quickly becomes clear that Sandy is interested in more than Burt’s spreadsheet-handling skills. In flash back, the play chronicles the decades of repression that have lead Sandy to make terrible decisions with dire consequences for him and everyone he loves.

Directed by M. Michele Phillips, The Paris Letter calls upon four of the five cast members to play dual roles. The fifth, Anton, serves as the story teller who weaves in and out of the action. SNAP! happily welcomes back to the stage Connie Lee, David Mainelli, Randy Vest and Michal Simpson, along with Producer Gina Wagner, Assistant Director Brian Callaghan, Set Designer Adam Nathan and Lighting Designer Homero Vela. Shelterbelt Alums, but newcomers to SNAP! are Eric Grant Leanna in the roles of Sam Arlen/young Sandy, and Lora Kaup as Costume Designer.

Buy your tickets now for Jon Robin Baitz’s riveting drama. The Paris Letter will run from March 9 – April 1, 2012 at 3225 California Street.Curtain times are 8:00 pm, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 6:00 pm on Sundays. The musical is based on Shepherd Mead’s  satirical book of the same name, which was a best seller when it was published  in 1952. The story follows a young window washer, J. Pierpont Finch, who has  read Mead’s book and is certain he can apply what he has learned to climb up the  corporate ladder at the World-Wide Wicket Company, a multi-national but poorly  connected business.

Finch begins in the mail room and uses sneaky and  dubious activities to push out those above him, and to eventually rise to Vice  President in Charge of Advertising.  Those he pushes out are either fired  or moved to other sections of the company. His tactics seem to be paying off.  Along the way he begins to fall in love with Rosemary Pilkington, a young  secretary. Along the way we meet numerous colorful characters, including   J. B. Biggley, the company president, and Bud Frump, his bratish nephew who  believes he should be the one to move up in the company. Will Finch rise to the  top, or go down in flames? Will he get the girl? This amusing and clever musical  will keep the audience entertained with its antics as well as its catchy musical numbers.
